Summer Opportunities Database Panel Discussion


"WHAT SHOULD I DO OVER THE SUMMER???"

"Is it too early(or late) to start looking for a summer camp?"
"Should I attend or work at a camp/festival?"
"What are some other positions offered at summer camps/festivals?"
"How can I make my application stand out?"
"Interviews make me nervous,...what are some pointers?"

These are the questions that most music majors ask themselves around this time...

...That's why we held a Summer Opportunities Database Panel Discussion to help alleviate these concerns.

              • Turn it in Early! - Employers start hiring even before the application is due!

                • Who? - More beneficial to have someone who knows you well than a person with a high status
                • 2 week rule - Give the reference 2 weeks prior to the due date to complete the recommendation

                • Its important to get the best recording possible(without spending too much)

                  • Prepping - do some research on the camp/festival that you're interviewing with
                  • Location - have a comfortable place for you to interview, like your bedroom.  Also, stand up and do gestures so that you have more inflections in your voice
                  • Landline - using a landline phone will facilitate clarity on both ends
                  • Remember everyone's name who is interviewing you - write them down on a piece of paper as they tell you
                  • Have common questions already answered - Have these answers ready!
                    • Tell me about yourself?
                    • Why do you want this job?
                    • Weakness? Strengths?
                    • Why should I hire you?
                    • Go over procedures for Situational questions
                  • Have questions to ask them - important!  This shows that you have interest and opinions to offer...
                    • What is a normal day like?
                    • What are they other employees going to be like?
                    • What have past employees gone on to do?
                    • What benefits have past employees obtained from the position?
                  • Thank You email/letter within 24 hours - Few people do this, so this will get you brownie points!
                • Following up
                  • Be Persistent! - but don't be pushy....once a week should be fine
                  • "I'm just inquiring about the status of my application..."
            1. Getting ready for the camp/festival
              1. Transportation - be sure you arrive on time - Don't start off on the bad foot
              2. Packing - pack only your essentials
            2. How to get the most of your experience
              1. Create Opportunities offer to help whenever you can!; try to create contacts and follow up
              2. Use your time wisely - Remember that this is a learning experience; try to gain as much as you can from it
              3. Be social - It's like freshman year all over again
            3. Networking and keeping in contact
              1. The professional world is about who you know! - It's a small world, so you don't want to burn your bridges...
              2. Use anything! - Facebook, AIM, Snail Mail!
            4. Come back and include your experience on the blog!
